June 1990

The first city delegation to Eutin included Mayor Shirley Martin-Smith, Bunker and Marilyn Clark, Ann Evans, Winnie and Al Gallup, Charles and Mary Loveland, Mike Rundle, Bob and Sandra Schumm, Brad Tate, Gary Toebben, Faye Watson, and Frank Baron. A document outlining mutual projects or “Areas of Agreement,” was signed.

June 1990

For its first cultural event, the Lawrence delegation created an art exhibit in Eutin of works by Lawrence artists. A 1920 pen drawing by Albert Bloch (“the American “Blue Rider” and KU Art Department Chair for many years) was gifted to the Eutin museum.

The KU German Summer Institute was conducted by Professor Frank Baron.

First High Scjpp; Exchange. The first group of six high school students from Lawrence were matched with partners in Eutin. Their exchange was coordinated by Hannelore Hess, LHS German teacher, and Frank Baron. Participants were Cathleen Carothers, Jason Crawford, Adrienne Graham, Jennifer Van Schmus, David Wolf, and Michael Zeddies. They traveled with the KU German Summer Institute under the leadership of Frank Baron.

September 1990

First Intern. Medical student Inken Scheewe initiated internship arrangements in Lawrence; she interned under Dr. David Hiebert at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

November 1990

Cultural events. Lawrence actress Eunice Stallworth performed her one-person program, Images, twice in Eutin. 

Marilyn Clark, of the KU Libraries, went to Eutin to help in the development of plans for a research library with rare books from the 18th and 19th centuries.


1991

KU German Summer Language Institute was conducted by Frank Baron.

HS Exchange Participants were Rachel Aanonson, William Bowen, Flora Lee, Jason Pych, Mark Stover, and Monica Ward. They were accompanied by Lawrence High School teachers Nancy Albrecht (3 weeks) and Jim Beltch (3 weeks).

October 1991

A delegation from Eutin including Anke Deifuss, Otto Lippmann, Ursula and Peter Manz, Enni and Karl-Heinrich Müller, Manfred Meyer, and Helmut and Hella Scheewe visited Lawrence. Free State Brewery received the gift of one meter of beer glasses (without the beer) from the Eutin delegation.

October 1991 The Lawrence Arts Center hosted the Sister City Photography Joint Exhibit, consisting of 13 photographers from the Lawrence Photo Alliance and 21 photographers from Eutin.

Representing the Eutin libraries, Rosemarie Fleischer and her husband visited Lawrence.

October 1992

Veterans Park, on the northeast corner of 19th and Louisiana streets, included sundial sculpture created by Jim Patti and Bob Rose. The sculpture has the logo of the sister cities and a rose representing Eutin. Rose plantings surround the sculpture.

High School Exchange participants were Joanne Bjorge, Scott Borton, Cherie Crowther, Donald Salsbury, Adrien Vlach, and Paula Walters. They were accompanied by John Thulin, Lawrence High School Latin teacher.

Nine Lawrence junior high German students making a 20-day tour led by Phyllis deVries enjoyed homestays for a weekend in Eutin. This ‘taste’ of Germany is intended to lure students to stick with the study of German and to participate in future Lawrence-Eutin high school exchanges.

November 1993

Meike Klüver of the Eutin bank (Sparkasse Eutin) interned for six weeks at Douglas County Bank.

HS Exchange Participants were Jennifer Elston, Cassie Hays, Rachel Modrzynski, Joni Mullen, Courtney Wilson, and Darren Smith. They were accompanied by Gerald Denning, Lawrence High School ESL teacher.

Hans Schirrmacher lead an anniversary delegation to Lawrence. The delegation included his wife Ingrid, Ande Deifuss, Eckhart and Marga Friesecke, Jens Hegel, Petra Kahmke, Wilhelm and Christel Kressin, Otto and Henny Lippmann, Gernot Seeger, and Helmut and Hella Scheewe.

A crowd of about 350 enjoyed the Lawrence Civic Choir performance under the direction of Rob Reid in the St. Michaeliskirche in Eutin. The 30-member choir and several family members kicked of a European tour with three days in Eutin.

Six Eutin Gymnasium students joined their exchange partners in Lawrence. The six Eutin students ‘shadowing’ their Lawrence counterparts at Lawrence High School were Hildegard Anna Klessig, Lina Bickel, Georg von Polier, Beute Lücht, Christian Brandt, and Benjamin Reichardt. Teacher/chaperone (left) was Sönke Peters, Weber Schule.

October 1996

Gudrun Kruse, deputy president of the Eutin city council led a large delegation from Eutin including a group of Eutin fire fiighters, their families, and friends.


1997

Friends-of-Lawrence was established in Eutin. The officers were Helmut Scheewe, president, and Bernd Ditscher, vice president.

Ten Gymnasium students from Eutin were accompanied to Lawrence for the High School Exchange by Toni Schöfer (Voss Gymnasium) and wife Gisela. They enjoyed a Friday evening sail on Clinton Lake with their hosts, Phyllis de Vries and Gary Webber.

Shana R. Rippe is the first of five KU student business interns at the Sparkasse, an Eutin bank.

Nineteen Lawrence junior high German students enjoyed a 16-day Junior Student Travel Program, including a weekend of Eutin homestays. In Eutin Helmut Scheewe, president of Friends of Lawrence, made the arrangements. Chaperones for the trip were Lawrence German teachers Friedemann Eisert, Winnie Eisert, and Phyllis Farrar, and jeweler Peter Zacharias.

University of Kansas Professor James Higdon performed an organ recital in Eutin.

October 1998

Ten students and a teacher from Eutin completed this year’s high school exchange - visiting host families in Lawrence for six weeks. They inevitably learn more abut American culture and brush up on their English. The students were accompanied by Joachim Zier, an art teacher.

Martin West, organist of St. Michaeliskirche (church) and the Schloss (palace), performed a recital at the University of Kansas.

Mayor Erv Hodges traveled with a Friends of Eutin delegation to Germany to celebrate ten years of our sister-city partnership. Delegates included Lawrence City Commissioner Marty Kennedy, Lawrence Chamber of Commerce President Gary Toebben, USD 497 Superintendent Kathleen Williams, Free State High School Principal Joe Snyder, Southwest Junior High School Principal Trish Bransky, and Lawrence Fire Marshal, Major Rich Barr. A closer look at our sister city provided insights into similarities and differences. The form of city government, school practices, and an abundance of bike paths made lasting impressions

October 1999

Eutin Mayor Gernot E. Grimm led an 11-person delegation celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Lawrence-Eutin partnership. Their visit included a luncheon at the Kansas Union, introductions at the City Commission Meeting - at which an Eutin flag was presented to the City-, tours of the high schools, Haskell University and the University of Kansas, and stays in private homes. A public reception was held at the Lawrence Visitors Center in the refurbished Union Pacific Depot in North Lawrence. The delegation was in Lawrence five days.
