<image:caption>The dynamic relationship between Lawrence and Eutin evolves constantly and has involved hundreds of University of Kansas students, hundreds of high school students, choirs, artists, librarians, doctors, bankers, and city officials. Such visits often create lifelong ties, prompting additional unofficial trips in both directions. Indeed, the Sister City relationship has fostered at least 4 marriages! <image:caption>Each year 6-10 students visit Eutin in June, living with host families while attending one of the two Gymnasien (high schools). Group excursions typically include cities in the area such as Hamburg, Lübeck, Kiel, Berlin, Potsdam, etc. Their host brothers/sisters reciprocate by visiting Lawrence in the fall and attending one of our high schools for three weeks. A teacher chaperones each group. For more on the 2025 exchange….</image:caption>

<image:caption>Every five years Lawrence celebrates the Sister City anniversary by sending a delegation to visit Eutin, usually in June. These visits traditionally include a reception at city hall , a sightseeing cruise on the lake, and an American Friendship banquet. Typically, Fall brings a delegation from Eutin to visit Lawrence, most of whom stay with host families arranged by the Friends-of-Eutin committee. Lawrence participants travel at their own expense. <image:caption>Opportunities have been created in a variety of professions, including spots in banks, newspapers, public relations, radio broadcast, language instruction, breweries, and the Eutiner Festspiel orchestra and chorus. Individual interests are the basis for developing internships. Leaders in the Freunde-von-Lawrence group in Eutin and the Friends-of-Eutin Committee of SCL facilitate appropriate matches and finding host families. These on-location learning opportunities benefit the visiting intern, the institutions, and both communities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Eutin, Germany - Sister City of Lawrence, KS, USA - Our ‘History’ - finding a ‘sister city’</image:title>
<image:caption>In the mid-1960s a German professor at the University of Kansas, Helmut Huelsbergen, sought a location for a summer language institute to offer KU students and ‘found’ Eutin. Arrangements for hosting students in private homes, the idyllic community setting, and hiring of Helmut Scheewe, a Voss-Gymnasium teacher, helped the institute succeed. After several decades of this one-sided relationship it was time to explore more reciprocal arrangements…. View the Eutin/Lawrence timeline</image:caption>

<image:caption>Since our formal agreement, signed in September of 1990, this has been a dynamic relationshop. Many Lawrencians have benefitted from this program - including city officials, educators, students and their families, and those in a variety of professions. Even during the global COVID pandemic relationships were maintained ‘virtually’.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hiratsuka, Japan - Sister City of Lawrence, KS, USA - Student Exchanges</image:title>
<image:caption>Every year a youth group, grades 7-12, is organized to visit Hiratsuka. Applicants write an essay and submit a letter of recommendation in the fall. Here is the 2026 application packet (pdf). Beginning in January, those selected attend monthly “Saturday sessions” to prepare for the trip. The summer trip to Japan lasts about 10 days and typically includes staying in a dormitory, then staying with a family, visiting schools, museums, and other points of interest. The students are accompanied by one or two chaperones. Soon after returning to Lawrence the students and their families reciprocate by hosting their Hiratsuka partners for about ten days. The itinerary here is developed by the Friends of Hiratsuka committee. Facebook Group “Lawrence Sister Cities Hiratsuka Site”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Every five years Friends of Hiratsuka celebrates the Sister City anniversary by sending a delegation to Japan, and in turn hosting their delegation here. These visits strengthen ties between residents and institutions. The pattern was disrupted by Covid for the 30th anniversary, but meeting online was a satisfactory substitute. Plans are being developed for the 35th anniversary celebration in 2025.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Lawrence City Commission, headed by Mayor Sandy Praeger, appointed Marnie Argersinger and Carol Shankel to organize a sister cities steering committee in September 1986. The Commission asked them not only to study and recommend an organizational structure that could support sister city relationships but also to find a sister city in Japan. The necessary groundwork for this relationsahip was finalized by Carol Shankel and George Woodyard working with Hiratsuka city and Kanagawa University officials. Lawrence hosted the first delegation from Hiratsuka in Lawrence in February 1990. Read more on the Hiratsuka/Lawrence timeline ></image:caption>

A welcome party was hosted on Christmas Eve by Diana Carlin, Joe Pierron, and the Friends-of-Iniades committee. Dimitra Pistikou and Maria Lahana baked a Euro coin into the cake, ensuring a year of good luck for the Lawrencian who was served the lucky piece! On Jan. 2, our Greek visitors flew to Chicago for a couple day’s visit and covid testing required before boarding their flight home. At the next Sister Cities Lawrence governing board meeting Bob Schumm, Friends-of-Iniades committee chair, acknowledged it had been a challenging time for planning because of the pandemic and the holidays, but the fact that the group arrived and returned home safely was a major accomplishment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On June 3rd, 4 students from Free State, 4 students from Lawrence High, and one student from Seabury Academy had the opportunity to embark for 3 weeks abroad in our Sister City of Eutin with their chosen host families. After their arrival, they spent 5 days in Berlin, seeing several historical sights including a day trip north to pay respects at a former death camp, Sachsenhausen. The exchange students then spent the next two weeks living a typical German life. They attended one of two high schools in Eutin, either the Voss Schule or the Weber Schule. They made plans with friends in town, enjoyed evenings and weekends with their host families, and a few times a week, had a former USD497 German instructor pull them out of class for various day trips to see the surrounding sights and towns, including Hamburg, Lübeck, Kiel, and others. The group returned home on the 25th of June.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Over seventy KU student musicians and faculty members traveled to Eutin for about six weeks in July and August, working very hard to make the Eutiner Festspiele (festival) successful. Their summer program included the organization of a summer music institute, preparations a KU production of Humperdink’s “Hansel und Gretel”, the opera orchestra for Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” and several public concerts by vocalists and instrumentalists. After the premiere of “Don Giovanni”, Conductor Rudolf Piehlmayer praised the youthful KU orchestra for its hard work, dedication, and success. Hans Wilhelm Hagen and Klaus Hoth, Eutin’s prime movers behind the Eutiner Festspiele, were more than satisfied. (Read more in the December newsletter below.) “KU School of Music students performing in two operas in Eutin, Germany,” Lawrence Journal World, July 19, 2011, announces the first summer of KU students participating in the Festival performances in Eutin.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Lawrence - Iniades partnership, established in 2009, is in the process of renewal. Its full potential is yet to be realized by enthusiastic leaders both here and in Messolonghi. The original Sister City agreement was made with Katochi, location of the ancient site, Iniades, where the KU Department of Theater semiannual study abroad program was hosted. Since Katochi has been incorporated into the municipality of Messolonghi, plans are being made to officially reflect that change. Timeline</image:caption>

<image:title>Messolonghi, Greece - Sister City of Lawrence, KS, USA - Exchanges</image:title>
<image:caption>The initial youth exchange with Iniades occurred in 2019. Eight teens, grades 8-10 were accepted; they met with a chaperone, Amy Meyers, Latin teacher at Bishop Seabury Academy, for six orientation sessions starting in January. In July they flew to Athens, then traveled by bus to Katochi. They lived 6 days with host families in Iniades, Katochi, and Messolonghi. Excursions included stays on Corfu and in Athens. To reciprocate, 8 students and 2 chaperones expected to visit Lawrence for about 10 day home-stays the following year. Due to the Covid pandemic their visit was delayed until December of 2021. See more details on the Timeline. Further exchanges are on hold until the revised agreement can be finalized.</image:caption>

They live, dormitory style, in an elementary school in Katochi for six weeks of rehearsals. The program’s culminating production is performed in Greek and English with the aid and participation of Dimitra Pitsikou and students form her language school. <image:title>Messolonghi, Greece - Sister City of Lawrence, KS, USA - History of our partnership</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1986 a theatre symposium conducted at the 4th century BC Oeniades Ancient Theatre by Professor Emeritus Andrew Tsubaki of the University of Kansas marked the re-opening of the theatre for performances. Performances have continued biannually through the KU Summer Theatre & Dance in Oiniades program, for more than thirty years. Since the plays are conducted partly in English, partly in Greek, and include locals in the chorus, they provide community and tourist entertainment. During July and August 2008 numerous meetings were held between leadership in Lawrence Sister Cities, Iniades representatives, Lawrence city officials, KU Theater and Film faculty, and students who had participated in KU summer programs. Discussion was centered around a letter of interest from the mayor of Iniades for creating a Sister City connection. Consequently the Friends-of-Iniades group was established in November 2008 in Lawrence. A sister cities agreement was approved and signed October 20, 2009 by Lawrence Mayor Robert Chestnut and Iniades Mayor Adonios Aletras. Timeline</image:caption>
