June-July 2000
KU German Summer Language Institute was conducted by Frank Baron.
The Friends-of-Lawrence group began an annual tradition of German-American evenings in Eutin.
HS Exchange participants were Elizabeth Anderson, Colleen Boley, Phillip Champion, Daniel Gentry, John Howat, Amanda (Mandy) Johns, Lincoln Lewis, Dennis Mersmann, Dustin Patterson, Seth Readinger Elizabeth (Betsy) Rowden, Joseph (Joe) Shelton, Sarah Underwood, and Naomi Welch. They were accompanied by Friedemann Eisert.

Six Lawrence junior high German students took a 19-day tour of Germany which included a weekend of homestays in Eutin. The group was led by Phyllis Farrar (formerly deVries), West Junior High German teacher.

Due to travel restrictions following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in USA, Eutin Gymnasium students had to postpone their trip to Lawrence until the following March.
November 2001
At the invitation of the KU summer language institute, two Eutin Gymnasium students, Franzika Stahlberg and Benjamin Beck, won scholarships to visit the University of Kansas.
University of Kansas student Rolf D. Snyder was the fourth in a series of five KU student interns at the Sparkasse, an Eutin bank.

Ten Eutin Gymnasium students completed the second half of the 2001 HS Exchange, which had been postponed after the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. They arrived on a snowy weekend and stayed through spring break.

Four Lawrence junior high German students took a 16-day tour of Germany which concluded with a weekend of home stays in Eutin. The group included two parents, Dale Johnson and Michael Windheuser, and group leader, Phyllis Farrar, West Junior High German teacher.

Eutin Police Chief Martin Vollertesen and his wife visited Lawrence. Eutin bank official Bastian Walkoff came to Lawrence for a week to discuss possible bank exchanges.

High Schools Exchange participants received a family welcome at the Eutin tennis center. Students from Lawrence were Jennifer Falk, Shannon Fisher, Tim Haynes, Justin Kelley, Andy Lowder, Michelle Miller, Jennifer Raney, Kit Swain, and Katie Young. They were accompanied by teachers Phyllis Farrar and Uschi Kuhn-Laird.

Nine Eutin Gymnasium students spent five weeks in Lawrence on the High Schools Exchange. The welcome party included a softball game. Excursions for the group included the Steamboat Arabia Museum in Kansas City, MO, the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, the Santa Fe Trail and National Tall Grass Prairie Preserve, and the Capitol in Topeka. Their teacher/chaperone was Alheid Szellinski, exchange coordinator at the Voss-Schule.

The Fifteenth Anniversary delegation from Lawrence visited Eutin to celebrate our sister-city relationship. Delegates were Nancy and Gary Bjorge, Pat Eddishaw, Friedemann Eisert, Jon Josserand, Kathleen, Taylor, and Tom Hodge, Graham Kreicker, Rebecca Phipps, Mike Rundle, Scott Seeger, Bob and Sandra Schumm, Carmen Taleghani-Nikazm, and Frank and Betty Baron. Nancy Bjorge presented an exhibition of her art work in the Eutin library.

An Eutin delegation headed by Mayor Klaus-Dieter Schulz continued the fifteenth anniversary celebration in Lawrence. He was welcomed by Boog Highberger and Mike Rundle and other friends who gathered at the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Department station #5.

The Eutin delegation were guests at a banquet hosted by Friends of Eutin and the Lawrence Sister Cities Advisory Board. Eutin presented an 1825 colored lithograph from the Eutin Castle collection to the city of Lawrence. Robert Berkeley Green presented a drawing of the “Apostle” (1934) to delegates for permanent exhibition in the Eutin museum.

Lawrence Children’s Choir Tour. Friends-of-Eutin and Freunde-von-Lawrence played significant roles in the development of a 10-day concert tour to Germany. The tour choir included 66 of its 75 singers, ages 11-15. They were accompanied by 23 adults, including musical director Janeal Krehbiel and her staff, parent chaperones, and tour organizers. The candlelight concert in the Michaeliskirche was stunning.
Lawrence Children’s Choir Tour. The choir performed a total of seven concerts: three in Eutin (Weberschule, Deutsch-Amerikaner-Abend, and Michaeliskirche) , and one each in Lübeck, Bad Schwartau, Berlin/Hellersdorf, and Fürstenwald. They could also spontaneously show gratitude for the great hospitality shown them - such as here at the Eutin Volunteer Fire Department’s “Grillfest”.

Melanie Hadley (piano) and Aleksandr Snytkin (violin), both graduates of the KU School of Music, presented a successful concert of music by Haydn, Schumann, Albeniz, Barber, and Rachmaninoff in Eutin.

Eutin Gymnasium students were hosted in Lawrence by the High School exchange families. On the Tuesday following their arrival they are traditionally introduced and welcomed at a Lawrence City Commission meeting. Sigurd Penthin was the teacher/chaperone.

The twenty-member Guitar Orchestra of Eutin performed before about 270 people in Liberty Hall in Lawrence.

Eutin and Lawrence renewed their bond as sister cities amidst celebrations of Eutin's 750th anniversary. Lawrence artist Jan Gaumnitz presented a sculpture “Eternal Spring” to the city of Eutin. Since the Eutin Volunteer Fire Department typically puts on a “grillfest’ for Lawrence visitors, this year’s delegation turned the tables by bringing some supplies for a Kansas barbecue (packing #5 cans of beans, sacks of cornmeal in luggage). The picnic was organized by Bob Schumm and prepared with the assistance of other members of the delegation and the fire fighters. Lawrence Journal World, June 7, 2007.

HS Exchange Participants were Laura Drees, Emily Foerschler, Robert Woods, Anna Kuczera, Jordan Moshiri, Will Pendleton, Alexandra Skarka, Erin Tomkins, Ryan Towns, and Nicholas Vetter. They were accompanied by teachers Phyllis Farrar and Ursula Kuhn-Laird.
On the lakefront in Eutin, the boulder in front of the “Haus des Gastes” (Guest Pavillion) held a bronze plaque with the Sister City logo and provided a great photo op.

Eutin Gymnasium students were hosted by High School Exchange participants in Lawrence. Participants were Henrike Bohl, Nils Daumann, Falko Degner, Oliver Kardell, Jana Klausberger, Anna Koch, Antonia Julitz, Nils Meyer, Merten Stender, and Eva Wendt. Their teacher/chaperones were Birgit Steingraber-Klinke and Thomas Dretzler.
On an outing to the Kansas capitol in Topeka, the group met Governor Kathleen Sibelius.

Eutin officials welcomed Lawrence delegates to celebrate the 20th Anniversary on Saturday, May 30, 2009. Mike Dever, Mayor of Lawrence, spoke on behalf of the 18-member delegation, with Dr. Bill Keel serving as interpreter. As part of the 20th anniversary celebration Lawrence photographer Caroline Young was invited to send an exhibit of her photography to be displayed at the Kreisbibliothek (county library) in Eutin. The Lawrence Journal World reported: “Rate of Exchange”.

Two members of the Lawrence Guitar Quartet, Marc Gruenberg and Morgan Bahn, performed together with the Carl Maria von Weber Orchestra. They presented joint concerts in several cities in Northern Germany.

Many strong friendships have developed over the years. Among them are Bernd (on left) and Anke Ditscher (not pictured), Eutin, and Winnie (center) and Friedemann Eisert (on right) of Lawrence. Herr Ditscher served as vice-chair on the Friends-of-Lawrence board and often arranged transportation for exchange groups from the Hamburg airport to Eutin and various sightseeing excursions for delegations from Lawrence. The Eiserts, teachers in Lawrence USD 497 schools, organized and accompanied high school exchanges from 1999 to 2009.

The Lawrence Guitar Quartet joined the Eutin Carl Maria von Weber Orchestra at the Lawrence Arts Center to present a concert of classical music. Members of the Lawrence Guitar Quartet were Morgen Bahn, Bob Cross, Marc L. Greenberg and Gary Reich. The Eutin orchestra members included Sandra Flessau, Julia Schwill-Engelhardt, Hannah Krüger, Inken Koch, Sophia Redöhl. Janine Siewert, Britta Wittchow, and Jonas Damm.
An additional concert was presented at First Congregational Church, Topeka, the next day as announced in the Topeka Capitol Journal.
